Beginning on June 15, 2011, the United States Navy is testing diesel-powered hybrid vehicles.
For the next six months, the US Navy will be testing a total of four vehicles at two Naval locations. Bangor, Washington, and San Diego, California, will each test one diesel hybrid and a similar non-hybrid vehicle.
The goal of the testing is to determine which vehicle will diminish fuel costs for both the Navy and the rest of the country.
The tests are also meant to “determine how well the hybrids match up in the real world against their conventional counterparts,” says Captain Paz B. Gomez, commanding officer of the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center.
All data retrieved by the tests will be given the Department of Defense and other federal government organizations.
